The Latest statement from the Director of Public Health

Message from Emma Ferguson (Stockport Council)

Rates are still declining across Stockport and are currently at 266.9* per 100,000 population: around 112 people per day. See the latest published data online). This is still slightly above the Greater Manchester average, but considerably lower than national levels.

Here is the latest DPH statement - Statement from the Director of Public Health - Stockport Council

This week we have focused on the Government’s Living With Covid strategy, both in terms of the lifting of restrictions but also how we can continue to adapt behaviours to reduce the risk of catching and passing on COVID-19

Parenting Course for culturally diverse and linguistically diverse communities - Just Psychology

Please find below the information for the Parenting Course and links to referral forms as promised at the PIMHS training. I apologise for the delay in getting these to you. We wanted to make some minor amendments on the forms for clarity.

Just Psychology launched the Parenting Course in February 2021. The project will support families from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. We take a solution-focused and strengths-based approach within this group, and we always highlight to parents how they already have a lot of skills and expertise. We are here to provide information on what it means to be a parent in the UK, and how to parent our child according to the UK law. The course also offers alternative parenting strategies for challenging behaviour, safe space for discussions, and information on how to access support from services, if, and when needed. We conclude the 6 weeks by having a celebration and giving out certificates of achievement (we found out through our consultations that this is very important).

The parenting course is available to parents and carers (or relatives involved in the child's care) living within Greater Manchester, with children aged between 0-17. We will provide, creche, interpreters and contribute towards travel costs.

The agency referral form is for practitioners to fill out and the self-referral link can be shared with anyone to fill out themselves:

Self-Referral (this form can be completed by the parents themselves, or get help from anyone in their communities e.g., neighbours or friends):

Diabetes & Ramadan

Message from Lisa Holland (Diabetes UK)

Diabetes UK are sharing information and resources ahead of Ramadan to support people living with diabetes who are planning for and participating in the holy month. As part of this, we have already held a diabetes and Ramadan webinar and we are undertaking communications and press work to help get information and support out to anyone who could benefit from it. We’re hoping to share stories of people’s lived experience of managing diabetes during Ramadan, whether they choose to fast or not and we’re hoping you may be able to support us in finding some of those stories? We’ve also been approached by ITV who we are supporting on a news feature and we’d like to share the story of somebody living with the condition who observes Ramadan about how they prepare and participate in the holy month safely.

If you’re aware of anybody who would like to share their story as part of our press and communications work, please encourage them to get in touch with our Regional Communications Officer, Carmel Ganner via email carmel.ganner@diabetes.org.uk

Stockport’s long COVID Peer Support Group

Message from Alison Whitelegg (Stockport Council)

Living with long COVID can be frightening, frustrating and isolating for both the person struggling with long COVID symptoms, and their family and friends. This friendly group is not run by medics but offers a place where people struggling with long COVID can come together to chat, listen and share experiences, knowing they’ll be understood. Guest speakers also offer advice and information.

The group is there to help whether you’ve been struggling on your own, have been diagnosed with long COVID, have only just developed symptoms or are caring for somebody with long COVID.

Please help spread the word about the group which meets:

  • every Wednesday on Zoom, 11.30am to 12.30 – it’s a drop in so you can just join in when you feel like it
  • for a drop in coffee morning on the third Monday of every month (excluding bank Holidays), 10.30 to 11.30am at Vernon park café (inside the park) Turncroft Lane, SK1 4AR.  Just come along and say Hi to the group.
  • members can also join the group’s Whatsapp

Members of the group say;

‘Sometimes it’s just good to hear others sharing their long COVID stories, we laugh at our brain fog tales or share our frustrations, we share our experiences and we get advice.  But most of all, we have long Covid in common and not everyone understands what it’s like living with long COVID’

‘If you have long COVID come and join us. The group really is very supportive.  There is absolutely no pressure and we are all made to feel very welcome.’

International Women's Day 2022

Message from Polly Riggs (Stockport Council)

It’s International Women’s Day (8th March) which is a time to celebrate women, to connect on the issues that are important to them, and for their allies to listen and partake too. The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. This year in Stockport, we are marking IWD by:

  • Asking female leaders in Stockport to contribute to a short video for our IWD celebrations. The purpose of these videos is to celebrate women leaders within Stockport, recognising that leadership comes in many forms, to reflect on how we got to where we are, and to inspire young people in Stockport on how they too can #BreakTheBias. The video will be produced in collaboration with One Stockport and will be shared on social media pages during on International Women’s Day.
  • Share details of any events you are holding for IWD
  • Asking contributors to tweet on the day using #BreaktheBias and #OneStockport
  • Setting up a women and girls network to celebrate and support women and girls across the borough.  The first meeting of this group will be on 26th April 2022 from 2-4pm if you would like to attend please go to sign up:

Please see attached the video brief which includes more detail on how to record your video.  It would be great if you could share this across your networks to have videos from as many women across Stockport as possible. You can use WeTransfer video files over to polly.riggs@stockport.gov.uk. For any issues with this process, please give Polly a call on

07855175491.

Videos will be shared via the One Stockport website and on social media. The deadline for submission of videos is 5pm on Wednesday 2nd March.

Have your say about local health services

East Cheshire NHS Trust and Stockport NHS Foundation Trust are working alongside the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups in Cheshire and Stockport to understand how some health and care services could be improved and sustained in the future.

A six-week listening exercise has been launched Monday, 21st February 2022, to gather opinions from health and care staff, patients, carers, and local people on what currently works well, what could be improved, and whether there are any barriers that stop people from accessing health services.

It includes a survey which covers a wide range of services including: Cardiology, Critical care and Anaesthetics, Diabetes and endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, General surgery, Imaging (X-ray and radiology). Trauma and orthopaedics, Urgent and emergency care (A&E) and Women’s and children’s services. It also seeks views on experiences of Planned Care and Community Services. Patients come from across Stockport and Cheshire and the Manchester area and from some parts of Derbyshire and Staffordshire to use our services. We welcome feedback from you wherever you live.”
