Signpost for Carers

Signpost Stockport for Carers is an independent local charity who have been supporting carers for more than 30 years. If you’re a Stockport carer or caring for somebody living in Stockport, we’re here for you.

A carer is anyone providing help to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage without them because of frailty, illness, addiction or disability. Carers often don’t recognise themselves as ‘carers’; they just think of themselves as helping out somebody they care about.

We want carers to be recognised for the extraordinary work they do to support others. It is our mission to support them in return. Whatever they may be facing, we want carers to know that they are not alone.

Signpost offer accessible and affordable counselling to carers and former carers. We have years of experience in delivering counselling. We understand the challenges your caring role brings and through counselling support we aim to alleviate some of that distress for you.

Signpost can direct carers to appropriate support, offer information on services locally and nationally, provide emotional and practical support, help you fill out benefit forms, and offer opportunities for you to gain companionship from other carers.

Our phone lines are open 8 am – 2 pm, Monday to Friday.

Signpost Young Carers

A ‘Young Carer’ is a child or young adult who spends time looking after or helping a member of their family who because of an illness or disability, mental health problem or drug and alcohol issue is unable to take care of everyday tasks themselves without some help. The help you may give could be shopping, making meals, doing the laundry, or perhaps you help out with nursing care, e.g. giving medication or lifting someone up and downstairs or in and out of bed. Maybe you give your time just to be with someone when they need company.

If you live in Stockport and this sounds like you and what you do, maybe we can be of some help.

Being a young carer can have a big impact on the things that are important to growing up. It can affect a young person’s health, social life and self-confidence. Many young carers struggle to juggle their education and caring which can cause pressure and stress.

Counselling Service

A qualified counsellor, offering sessions within schools to those young carers who are struggling to cope with their caring role or have experienced a bereavement.

School Support Service

We raise awareness across all schools in Stockport to ensure that young carers are identified at the earliest opportunity. We deliver assemblies, staff training sessions and offer regular ‘drop ins’ for young carers to access and offer each other peer support.

One to One Work

We allocate space and time for any Young Carers who need to talk about their feelings and any worries they may have.

If you or someone you know needs help, get in touch with the Young Carers team on 0161 947 4690. If you can't get through call Katy on 07540 722371. Alternatively email Young Carers at david@signpostforcarers.org.uk
