Stockport Law Clinic provides free legal advice

Message from Peter Cruickshank (Stockport Law Clinic)

Stockport Law Clinic provides free legal advice for the following matters:

  • housing
  • employment, and
  • social security (benefits).

We offer advice on legal options and remedy for the issue that has arisen (including written advice where appropriate), as well as letter writing, form filling, and advice about the legal process and what happens at Court and the Tribunal.

For housing, we are able to advise tenants who have received eviction notices. These can be section 8 eviction notices (alleged breaches of the tenancy agreement) or section 21 eviction notices (so called 'no fault' notices). We can advise clients about the legal process, about defences to claims for possession, and where appropriate, counterclaims against the landlord. We are able to advice on other housing matters including disrepair and fair rent valuations.

For employment, we advise on a range of cases including unfair dismissal and discrimination claims. This includes guidance regarding the ACAS process, limitation, correspondence with the respondent, and in complying with directions made by the Tribunal. We also offer help for clients in completing the ET1 (claim form).

For social security (benefits) cases, we will help clients with guidance in appealing decisions refusing, reducing or removing their entitlement to a benefit, including drafting submissions for the First Tier Tribunal.

The clinic operates as a drop-in service once a week on Monday evenings. The clinic is entirely free, is supervised by a barrister, and is insured through Advice UK. It currently takes place at Stockport Labour Club on the A6 (2 Lloyd Street, Stockport, SK4 1QP).
