Welcome to this week's Information Round-up!

The dust has settled on our Dementia Awareness event on 18 May at Stockport Town hall! What an amazing day - seeing opening speeches from our Mayor, Stockport Council CEO Caroline Simpson, Ruth Turner Healthwatch Lived Experience Member and Dementia United Carer Representative and our very own Chief Maria Kildunne.

We welcomed over 200 people through the doors, including Stockport residents, college and university students and health professionals. The day offered everyone the opportunity to explore stalls set up by local services and take in interesting and moving workshops, one of which from EDUCATE Stockport and people with lived experience of dementia.

Thanks to our services for offering their time and to our visitors - we hope the event went some way towards raising awareness and offering the chance to gain valuable help and advice.

Type 2 Diabetes Prevention week

Information from Lisa Holland on behalf of Yvonne Coalbran of Diabetes UK

May 22- 29 is Type 2 Diabetes prevention week - a joint campaign from the NHS and Diabetes UK. The campaign aims to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes; how to avoid it while encouraging us all to use the 'Know your risk' tool.

Recent figures from Diabetes UK show that the number of people in the UK living with diabetes has passed 5 million.

Millions of people across the UK are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is serious and every diagnosis is life changing. It’s a relentless condition, and the fear of serious complications is a lifelong reality for millions of people in the UK.

Diabetes UK’s free, online Know Your Risk tool, supports people to understand their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It takes just a few minutes to complete, advises you on your risk and some next steps that can help reduce this. Visit riskscore.diabetes.org.uk

Anyone at high risk of type 2 diabetes, or with a history of gestational diabetes, can ask their GP to refer them for a free place on the local Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. Those referred receive tailored, personalised support to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Rescare Online Forum 8th June- OUR LIFE OUR CHOICE CAMPAIGN

Our next forum welcomes Campaign Officer Molly Turner and Chair David Wilks of the Our Life Our Choice campaign taking place on Thursday 8th June 10am-11:30am

Background
In February 2022 families of people with learning disabilities and autism, whose loved ones faced ‘eviction’ from their long-term residential homes, formed an action group to steer the campaign:

OUR LIFE OUR CHOICE

The Aim
To update regulated care policy guidance to include existing and new group and village communities as a CHOICE of where to live alongside the other CHOICES of accommodation for people with learning disabilities and/or autism.

Why is this important?
Over the last 15 years around 40 group or village communities have closed. This has forced many people with a learning disability and / or autism to leave their CHOSEN long-term homes and friends against their wishes and those of their families and advocates.

The unfair policy guidance is enabling local authority commissioning groups to deny the right of this residential CHOICE and is being used as a justification by some care providers for closure of group and village communities.

Who is this event aimed at?

Everyone is welcome!

  • Families – People with Autism, People with a Learning Disability
  • Parents
  • Carers
  • Professionals – Social workers, Charity Workers, Health and Social Care Teams
  • Sponsors
