People with lung problems urged to keep active and breathe better

Keep Active, breathe better

Thousands of people in Greater Manchester who suffer from breathlessness are being urged to find out about a short exercise course which could improve their physical and mental health.

Called ‘pulmonary rehabilitation’, the free, six-week course has been shown to improve the physical and mental health of people with

conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

A new campaign called ‘Keep active, breathe better’ has been launched to encourage people to take part in the sessions.

Many who have completed the course report an increase in energy and fitness levels.

Arthur, a former ballroom dancer who was devastated when his health condition meant he had to give this up, found a new love of yoga after completing the programme.

He said: “It has been amazing for both my physical and mental health.”

Former gym-bunny June saw her confidence knocked and anxiety increased when she was hit by breathlessness.

She said after the sessions: “I now have the confidence boost I desperately needed and I can see that this positively impacts my work and personal life.”

And Jean was able to walk down the red carpet in Hollywood to see her daughter win an Oscar after taking part in the programme.

“It has given me a new lease of life,” she said.

People who are interested in joining the programme should speak to their GP to find out more. You can also read lots of information on the

Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme focuses on ethnic minority communities

The Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (DPP) is aiming to address health inequalities among ethnic minority communities by raising awareness of the DPP. The national campaign is encouraging people to discover their own personal risk level of developing type 2 diabetes via the Know Your Risk tool, hosted on the Diabetes UK.

People who are at moderate or high risk can then arrange to contact their GP practice who may refer them on to the DPP, which has had over 1.2m referrals since it began in 2016.

Get prepared ahead of the Easter bank holiday

With lots going on in the run up to Easter it’s easy to forget the smaller things like making sure you are well stocked up in your medicine cabinet or getting your repeat prescription in to the pharmacy in good time. However, your local NHS is urging us all to not leave it too late ahead of the upcoming bank holiday and days following where industrial action will again see significant pressure on our NHS services.

Every bank holiday the NHS 111 phone service sees huge increases in people contacting it about repeat prescriptions. Over the Jubilee Bank Holiday last year the service saw calls rising from 801 calls in the three days before, to 4,287 in the three days after -  A stark reminder that we all need to play our part and get prepared.

By re-stocking medicine cabinets, knowing when your GP practice is open and planning ahead for repeat prescriptions, people can ensure they make the most of Easter and are well-prepared for the busy period anticipated the following week.

People are also reminded that:

The local pharmacy can offer advice and treatment for lots of minor illnesses and ailments - without the need for an appointment. Many will still be open over the bank holiday, but some will operate with reduced hours.

Dental support can be accessed via the Greater Manchester dental helpline (0333 332 3800), which is available from 8am to 10pm every day, including weekends and bank holidays for those who need help urgently when their practice is closed, or do not have a regular dentist.

Greater Manchester’s Urgent Eye Care Service can provide assessments and treatment quickly if a sudden change in vision, red or painful eyes or new flashes or floaters are seen. This is a free NHS service, made up of local optician teams. Available to anyone registered with a Greater Manchester GP. To find out more, visit www.primaryeyecare.co.uk

Free, 24/7 mental health crisis support is available across Greater Manchester.

For Bolton, Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Wigan residents, call 0800 953 0285.

For Bury, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside and Glossop the number is 0800 014 9995.

Lastly, the first port of call for non-emergency health needs should be  NHS 111 Online  or call 111.
