Stockport Psychological Wellbeing Service

Message regarding Self help services

Stockport Psychological Wellbeing Service is a mental health charity offering one-to-one support and structured courses for anyone experiencing common mental health problems.

This is a free NHS adult service commissioned in Stockport for anyone aged 16+ years old wishing to access primary care mental health support.

Our service: We provide assessment, and treatment in the form of low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LICBT), for mild-to-moderate symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, stress, panic and sleep disturbance. Assessments and treatments can be delivered via the telephone, online or face-to-face in one of our many venues across the borough of Stockport. All clinical decisions are made in collaboration with our clients/patients, and we update GPs regularly throughout a client’s/patient’s treatment.”

PLEASE NOTE: We are NOT an emergency or crisis service and patients should be referred to appropriate emergency services if required.

Individuals can self-refer in the following ways and we would recommend clients self-referring online via our website:

Dangers of open water swimming

Message from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS)

On average. 400 people drown in the UK each year – some individuals survive drowning events, but, many are left with severe, life changing injuries.

Given the nature of what we do, we see the dangers. And we know all too well the horrors of what can happen if it goes wrong.

While a dip in a lake, canal, reservoir, river or sea can seem like the perfect way to cool off during a heatwave, it is never a good idea and can lead to tragedy. Whether you are a strong swimmer of not, water can be unpredictable and dangerous. Even on a hot day, open water can be incredibly cold and can cause your body to go into shock, making swimming extremely difficult.

Please remember:

  • Unsupervised water – There are hidden dangers lurking under the surface such as deep and cold water, debris and underwater currents which can result in drowning.

  • Keep an eye out – Children should always be supervised when they are in or around water.

  • Don’t be pushy – Never run, push, or jump on others when in a swimming pool or at a beach and if you see someone in difficulty tell a lifeguard of call 999.

  • On the water – If out in a boat or canoe always wear a life jacket.

Current work

Atrial fibrillation and stroke

This survey is looking to understand public views on how date from health records is used for research purposes and how it can be used to predict when someone is at risk of developing atrial fibrillation or having a stroke

Taking part will involve completed a short ONLINE survey (approx. 5 minutes)

This study is looking for:

  1. Diagnosis of a heart condition (e.g. atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease etc.)

  2. A permanent pacemaker

  3. Previous stroke

More about this opportunity:

  1. Findings will be used to inform a study looking to improve the way that atrial fibrillation (AF) and stoke are managed and treated and ultimately reduce the number of people who experience stroke of AF complications.

  2. It is being carried out by a team based at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in collaboration with the university of Liverpool.

Young Onset dementia scoping meeting

Our objectives

Establish a Greater Manchester wide group to steer and drive the priorities from across all localities and Greater Manchester for people affected by young onset dementia (YOD) and rarer forms.

Scope out and review current services and resources within Greater Manchester (GM)

Consider the demand/need and how feasible a model could be adopted for setting up a GM wide support group

Work with localities to review and refresh the ‘GM Approach to YOD and rarer forms’; the link here Greater Manchester Approach to Young Onset Dementia and Rarer Forms.

· Collate and review evidence based/public facing resources; and ensure that all information and resources are shared widely

Please join us to support the development of this project

  • We are looking for interested parties to join our project group and guide this work in meeting setting and meeting our objectives, over the next two years.

  • This includes people living with dementia, carers, and practitioners who work with people affected by dementia, voluntary sector organisations, national groups and people who commission services.

  • Our first meeting will take place on Monday 24th July, 12 – 13:15, via MS Teams.

  • At the first meeting we will provide an overview of proposed project objectives, consider our priorities for action and agree next steps.

Please contact Helen Pratt (Project Manager - Dementia United) if you would like more information or for a link/calendar invite to join the meeting
