Have Your Say: Protect Your Right to be Heard

Don't forget that Healthwatch Stockport are asking for your support in signing a petition to review the decision to abolish independent local Healthwatch and protect for people to have an independent voice.

So far, the number of people who have signed is nowhere near enough so we really need your help to sign and share this petition far and wide to have this petition considered by the Government.

Sign our petition.

The aim is to protect the independence of local Healthwatch services. A draft paper version is also planned to ensure accessibility for digitally excluded communities.

The background:

The NHS 10 Year Health plan proposes to abolish Healthwatch England and 152 local Healthwatch, and transfer functions ‘in-house’ to local authorities and NHS Integrated Care Boards once legislation has passed. This is a result of the Review of patient safety across the health and care landscape, led by  Dr Penny Dash.

Whilst we wait on more information from the Government, those closure has been a topic for discussion across Greater Manchester - making the agenda of the last Greater Manchester ICP Meeting, chaired by Andy Burnham. There was strong support in the room from the VCFSE, local authorities, and real appetite from Andy Burnham, Sir Richard Lees and Mark Fisher to explore patient voice further and consider what this change could mean for Greater Manchester.

We will update you as we know more.

Healthwatch Focus: Using Primary Care Services

  • What do you think of local Primary care services?
  • Do you struggle to get the care you need?
  • Can you access these services?
  • Do you face any barriers?
  • Do you need any communication support to understand what's available to you?

The team are continuing to research how our local community accesses Primary Care (GPs, pharmacies, dentists, eye care) if you have additional needs (physical, neurodiverse or mental health need). Please share your feedback and experiences with us and encourage others to do the same.

Message from Andy Burnham

Details from NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care

Listening to people’s experiences is the foundation of a truly person-centred health and care system. That’s why local Healthwatch organisations matter so deeply. They gather feedback from GPs, hospitals, dentists, social care and more – bridging the gap between service users and providers, turning lived experience into meaningful change.

As the Government considers closing Healthwatch nationally, we’re watching closely. Here in Greater Manchester, we’re showcasing how community insights drive better care, highlighting projects where local feedback has reshaped services for the better.

Thanks to our pioneering devolution arrangements, we’re uniquely placed to keep patient voice front and centre – whatever Healthwatch’s future format. Together, we’ll ensure every person is heard, every story fuels improvement, and our system grows stronger with every insight.

As we know, this summer saw the publication of two landmark strategies that will shape public service delivery across Greater Manchester for the next decade: the Greater Manchester Strategy 2025–2035 and the NHS 10-Year Health Plan.

Note from us: If you didn't see our message above, Healthwatch across England have issued a petition to call on the government to keep Healthwatch and protect your right to an independent voice. At Healthwatch, we enable you to do so as we strive for better health and social care.

Getting Medicines from an Online Pharmacy?

Details from General Pharmaceutical Council

Are you thinking of getting medicines online?  It’s important to be aware that there are thousands of illegal websites falsely claiming to be pharmacies and selling medicines to people without a consultation or a prescription.

There are concerns that people taking medicines used for weight management may turn to illegal online sellers to obtain these medicines at a lower cost, following recent announcements of price rises and stock shortages.

The Pharmaceutical Council are urging everyone to make sure any prescription medicines they get online are dispensed from a pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Check if a pharmacy is registered at  www.pharmacyregulation.org/registers

They have published a guide with other UK health organisations to help people keep safe if they decide to use online services.

Who’s Eligible for the Autumn 2025 Flu Vaccine

Details from the UK Health Security Agency

Flu is far more than just a bad cold. For some, it can increase the risk of developing serious lung and airway infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia or can make existing conditions worse. It is why getting vaccinated each year is vital.

The NHS website contains further information on eligibility, but if you're unsure whether you're able to have a free vaccination you can consult your GP, practice nurse, or pharmacist. If you’re pregnant you can also consult your midwife.

NHS GM Green Plan 2025-28 is Live

NHS Greater Manchester (GM) has launched its Green Plan 2025–28, setting out how we will cut carbon, protect health and create a fairer, greener region for everyone. The plan focuses on three key goals:

  • Achieving net zero NHS emissions by 2038.
  • Reaching net zero by 2045 for emissions we can influence.
  • Building a climate-ready NHS that cuts pollution, supports nature, and promotes better health.

There has been strong progress, including a 10% reduction in our carbon footprint since 2019, saving over 25,000 tonnes of carbon. The plan also builds on successes like expanding digital healthcare, boosting sustainable travel, reducing medicines waste, and increasing green spaces across NHS sites

Get Involved: New Therapy to Support Children With Unusual Sensory Experiences

Details from NHS Greater Manchester

The ChUSE trial (short for Children with Unusual Sensory Experiences) is offering the opportunity of tailored support to children aged 8 to 16 and their families.

What is the ChUSE trial about? Distressing sensory experiences, such as hearing voices, seeing visions, or feeling presences others don't, are often associated with emerging signs of psychosis.

These experiences are surrounded by stigma, which can make young people and their parents very anxious and seek help from children’s mental health services.

The trial has now expanded to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, increasing access for families across Greater Manchester.

To request information and get involved, contact chuse@gmmh.nhs.uk. It is recommended that you also speak with your CAMHS practitioner, who can arrange a referral for you.

Support For Parents This School Term

Details from Stockport Council

Have You Downloaded the Family Hubs App? As many families head back to school the app offers help with anything affecting your family, from practical advice to emotional wellbeing. Visit our Family Hubs web pages or download the Family Hubs app for free video guides and expert advice to help you prepare.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND): The SEND Local Offer provides tailored support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), covering everything from school admissions to therapies and preparing for adulthood.

Cost of living: The cost of going back to school can add up. Support is available for:

School attendance: Being in school every day builds confidence and supports learning. Did you know children who miss even one day in the first week of term are more likely to have higher absence rates throughout the year? Regular attendance also increases the likelihood of progressing to further education, training, or employment after Year 11. 90% attendance might sound good in a test, but in school terms, it means missing one day every fortnight!

Nursery and school admissions for 2026 are now open. Stockport Council has invested in SEND provision by increasing specialist places and strengthening support in mainstream schools. We encourage families to explore all options.

  • Secondary school: Closing date is 31 October 2025
  • Primary school: Closing date is 15 January 2026
  • Maintained nursery places: Closing date is 31 March 2026

Funded childcare for working parents: Eligible working parents with children aged 9 months to school reception age can receive 30 hours of funded childcare per week, 38 weeks per year. Parents and carers should apply now for the term starting on or after 1 January, in advance of 31 December. Find out more on the Best Start In Life website.
