Latest Statement from Director of Public Health

Message from Alison North (Stockport Council)

This week’s statement focuses on the pop-up vaccination clinics which are running in Stockport to facilitate the Covid 19 spring booster programme and anyone who has not yet had a first or second vaccination or booster. It also mentions that children aged between 5 and 11 are being invited to get their first Covid vaccine at the One Stockport Hub, or, along with all eligible cohorts aged 12 plus.

Rates are still extremely high and are currently at 460.8 per 100,000 population: around 193.1 people per day. This rate is likely to be an underestimate in cases as free testing is no longer available. See the latest published data online

Here is the latest Statement from the Director of Public Health

This week we have continued to focus on booster and vaccine clinics along with the usual covid safety messaging.

Travel support for Ukrainian nationals

Message from Jade Gregory-Haselden (Transport for Greater Manchester)

I’m getting in touch as I wanted to share some details about travel support available for Ukrainian nationals. Transport operators in Greater Manchester are working together to support Ukrainian arrivals by offering them free onward travel to their final destinations in the UK. All Ukrainian nationals will be able to access free travel on Metrolink, all National Rail services and most bus and coach services in the city-region for up to 48 hours after arriving in the UK. Access to services requires a Ukrainian passport and a boarding pass or ticket showing an arrival date in the UK. For travel onwards from Greater Manchester, all National Rail train operators, and the majority of bus and coach services in England, Scotland, and Wales are also providing this support. More information about this scheme and wider support can be found here.

We would be grateful of any amplification you might be able to provide via your social channels, websites, newsletters and wider networks. To support this promotion please find attached a social media graphic and poster containing key messages.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Message from Alison Whitelegg (Public Health)

Every 15 minutes someone is diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK. It’s the second biggest cancer killer. But it shouldn’t be, as it’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.

The symptoms of bowel cancer can include:

  • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo
  • A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
  • A pain or lump in your tummy

Most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer. Other health problems can cause similar symptoms, but if you have one or more of these, or if things just don’t feel right, speak to your GP. For more information visit www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk

Screening for bowel cancer

There is a national screening programme for bowel cancer which aims to find cancer early or to find changes in your bowel that could lead to cancer.  Everyone aged 60 to 74 who is registered with a GP and lives in England is automatically sent a bowel cancer screening kit every 2 years. The programme includes 56 year olds.  You can watch this video from Cancer Research UK which explains more about the FIT test. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il6VSceMWfM

Make sure your GP practice has your correct address so your kit is posted to the right place. If you're 75 or over, you can ask for a kit every 2 years by phoning the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60.  If you're worried about a family history of bowel cancer or have any symptoms, speak to a GP for advice.

Reduce your risk

Find out how keeping a healthy weight by being physically active and eating a healthy, balanced diet can help reduce your risk of bowel cancer.  You can find information and details about local support to help you make healthy lifestyle changes on the Healthy Stockport website.

For more information about bowel cancer and details of how to get involved in Bowel Cancer Awareness Month visit https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/

Please share this message and help raise awareness.

Can you help NICE update part of our guidance on complex fractures?

Message from Jess Bailey (NICE)

I work in the public involvement team at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). I’m sure you already know, but NICE produces guidance on the most effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease and ill health, and provide social care support. Our guidance is based on research evidence and takes into account the views of people working in or using relevant services, and other stakeholder groups.

We are currently looking for patients and their unpaid carers, as well as their advocates (usually referred to as ‘lay members’ at NICE) to join the committee updating part of our guideline on complex fractures.

Specifically, the update of this guideline will look at whether negative wound pressure therapy (a treatment that involves drawing out fluid and infection from a wound to help it heal) is more effective compared to standard dressing therapy in people with an open fracture of their lower leg.

It’s a really niche topic, and I’m not sure if we will find someone interested in being on this committee. So, I wondered if you would be able to pass this opportunity onto your networks – and perhaps you know of local trauma networks in your area who might work with suitable patients and carers? The recruitment advert is here – providing details of what working with the committee involves, the kind of experience and knowledge we are looking for, and how to apply. Recruitment is open until midnight on Tuesday 3 May 2022.

We would welcome an application from those who have recent experience or knowledge of the area of this update and are able to reflect the views, experiences and needs of the public to ensure they are included in the development of this guideline. They need to be able to contribute effectively in a formal committee setting. Our lay members are paid a fee to attend meetings and we cover travel and other expenses.

If you consider it appropriate, please also promote this vacancy through social media or other communication channels (a newsletter, for example) at your disposal. The public involvement programme at NICE is on Twitter, and you can follow us @NICEGetInvolved – we would be very grateful if you could retweet our tweet to your followers about this recruitment which we have tweeted this week.

We really value the contribution that people who use health and social care services, their carers and advocates make to our guidelines, and would appreciate any help you can give in letting people know about this vacancy.

If you have any suggestions about what NICE could do to promote this recruitment with the right group of patients and carers, please do let me know!
